Apprentice Recruitment for Fall

We are very happy to announce that we are recruiting apprentices this Fall during our regular workshop season!

It’s not to say that everyone who takes a workshop is expected to apply, but if you’ve ever thought about joining KNT, this is how you do it:
-take Level I and II workshops this Fall
-state your interest to apprentice, and do a final workshop/audition
-apprenticeship generally runs for a year, at which time decisions about who is going to be a new KNT member will be made

We can’t begin to state all the various benefits of being in a taiko group, but to sum up, for us it’s about gaining confidence and happiness through activity, culture and community.

Workshop registration and payment is on our website www.kitanotaiko.ca/workshops

Please share with someone who you think would love taiko!

Beginner Workshops Open for Spring!

As the snow is beginning to melt (or maybe not??) we are happy to announce our Spring season of beginner workshops. We have different offerings for different interests- Level I, Recreational Taiko, and Hit Like a Girl.

Level I teaches the basics of taiko and its different elements in one session. By the end you will have learned the fundamentals of taiko and a song.

Recreational Taiko covers the same material as Level I, but it is spread over 4 classes so students have more time with the drums and with learning and retention of the material.

Hit Like a Girl is a special women-only workshop to explore the relationship between women and taiko. Students will learn how to hit powerfully safely, use their voices, work as a team and utilize their strong spirits!

All workshops are open to registration and payment by PayPal on our website www.kitanotaiko.ca/workshops.
Questions can go to info@kitanotaiko.ca

We are very excited for our upcoming production of Kolabo, a collaborative project with Firefly Theatre. It will be a very special night to experience both aerial circus and taiko, and then watch our debut acts of combining the two art forms. This show is the result of months of collaboration and creation between the groups, and features original compositions from the members of KNT. Please come see Kolabo!
Tickets available at Tix on the Square.

KNT Fall Fundraiser for the Hope Mission

The last time Kita no Taiko held a fundraiser for the Red Cross, we were really touched by the enthusiastic and warm community response and support. This year, we are holding another fundraiser, this time for the Hope Mission in Edmonton. The Hope Mission serves Edmonton’s growing population of homeless and housing insecure people. Their Ministry Van program assists by bringing food, warm clothing, medical attention and transportation to charitable centres. They serve over 1,500 people each year, with this number always increasing.

We all know our Winters can be long, cold, and miserable. Kita no Taiko empathizes with those without shelter for whom this is season is dangerous and life-threatening as well. Attendees at our fundraiser can donate coats and Winter wear, and bid in our Silent Auction. There will be gourmet hot dogs and merchandise from Japan. We will also have performances from Kita no Taiko and special guests in dancing, music and more, featuring collaborative performances not seen anywhere else!

Please share this event so that we may raise donations for the Hope Mission so they may continue to serve our fellow Edmontonians. You can also donate directly to the cause through PayPal here. Let us come together to bring the warmth of community and compassion for the start of the cold Winter.

In this clip she plays her own taiko that she uses to practice with at home. She discusses her mixed French and Japanese Canadian culture.
