Kita No Taiko Partners with Citie Ballet

This spring, Kita No Taiko is delighted to be participating in an innovative music and dance production that will help benefit the Japan Disaster Relief Fund.
The show is called Mosaic One, Drumbeat, and it’s a collaboration between Kita No Taiko and Edmonton’s Citie Ballet.
Citie Ballet is Edmonton’s very own ballet company. During its 12-year history it has mounted exciting neoclassical ballet and modern dance productions, including numerous groundbreaking world premieres.
The program of Mosaic One, Drumbeat synchronizes Kita No Taiko’s drum compositions with short dance pieces to produce a series of harmonious works that celebrate life.
Shaped by the many rhythms that reverberate throughout a city, the drum and dance pieces echo spontaneous street music and movement. Several local choreographers have given this theme their own unique interpretation. They include Solveig Groenland, Citie Ballet’s resident choreographer; Larissa Lynn, a former Citie Ballet dancer and emerging choreographer; and Francois Chevennement, Citie Ballet’s Artistic Director.
Mosaic One, Drumbeat is the first edition of Citie Ballet’s annual Mosaic series. The series will present new choreography in collaboration with local performers drawn from artistic disciplines beyond the world of ballet. The novelty of this approach, and Kita No Taiko’s role in helping to create the inaugural production, will no doubt introduce new audiences to Kita No Taiko.
This production is also a fundraiser for the Japan Disaster Relief Fund, which continues to assist people affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March of 2011. Five per cent of the ticket sales from the two performances will be donated to the fund.
Mosaic One, Drumbeat takes place Saturday March 3 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday March 4 at 2:30 p.m., at the Timms Centre for the Arts on the University of Alberta campus.
Tickets range from $15 to $55 and are available in advance from Tix on the Square, and also at the Timms just prior to the performances.
